Roland Barthes began to keep notes on index cards after the death of his mother, Henriette, on 25 October 1977. He wrote them in short entries until September 1979. They record moments of grief, memories, small daily facts, and reflections on loss, not as a continuous account but as fragments. He lived with her for most of his life.
Readers who have lost someone, and those who know Barthes's Camera Lucida, will find a spare, intimate record. It shows how grief can be studied while it is being felt.
Deep, inward-looking and contemplative; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Mindful Reader. Which reader are you?
