About the book

Dana, a Black writer living in Los Angeles in 1976, is suddenly pulled back to a Maryland plantation in the early nineteenth century, where she saves a drowning white boy, Rufus Weylin. Time and again she is called back whenever his life is in danger, and learns that he is her ancestor, so she must keep him alive to ensure her own existence. Dana's husband Kevin, who is white, is dragged along once. Octavia Butler uses time travel to ask what survival under slavery costs.

A strong choice for readers of historical fiction and science fiction alike. It is direct, discomforting and deeply human.
