Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, a Japanese television host, recalls her childhood during the Second World War. Expelled from a regular school as a disruptive first grader, Totto-chan is taken by her mother to Tomoe Gakuen, a school where classes are held in old train carriages. The headmaster, Mr. Kobayashi, lets the children follow their own interests, eat a lunch of food from the sea and the mountains, and learn through walks and play. Over the years, the war closes in, and the school meets a sad end.
A heartfelt memoir on progressive education for parents, teachers and anyone who likes childhood stories, it is warm and easy to read.
Practical and clear-cut; an easy read.
