About the book

Cipriano Algor, an old potter, lives with his daughter Marta and son-in-law Marçal, who works as a guard at the Center, a huge commercial complex. The Center is Cipriano's only customer, and one day it tells him it will stop buying his pottery. He tries to switch to making ceramic figurines, and the family gets by on stubbornness, a dog named Found, and hope. When Marçal is promoted and the family is asked to move into the Center, they must decide what they are willing to give up.

Saramago's novel fits readers who like quiet fables about craft, work and the pull of consumer society. His long sentences may be slow going, but the story is warm.
