In this novella, an elderly professor looks back on his youth. As a student in Berlin he spent his time drinking and gambling, until his father sent him to a small university, where he became fascinated by a professor of English literature and his lectures on Shakespeare. He moves into the professor's home and bonds with him and his young wife, only to find a secret in their marriage that puts him in an uncomfortable emotional position. Stefan Zweig traces how admiration, jealousy and desire can blur the lines of friendship.
Readers drawn to psychological fiction and the intense relationship between teacher and pupil will find a compact, moving story. It shows Zweig's skill at the subtle study of feeling.
Inward-looking and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
