Marguerite Duras gathers her wartime writings, mostly the diary titled The Pain, in which she waits in Paris in 1945 for her husband, Robert Antelme, a Resistance member deported to Dachau. She describes the wait for news, the return of the camp survivors and the care she gave him when he came back close to death. Other pieces in the book deal with the Resistance and its compromises.
It is for readers of memoir and of World War II. The notebook form gives an unusually raw account of waiting, fear and love.
Inward-looking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
