About the book

Death narrates the story of Liesel Meminger, who arrives in 1939 at the home of her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, in the town of Molching, near Munich. She is illiterate, but she steals her first book at her brother's burial, and Hans teaches her to read in the basement. Her friendship with the neighbor boy Rudy Steiner, and with the Jewish fist-fighter Max, whom the family hides, centers on books and words.

A very fine read for teenagers and adults interested in World War II from a German child's perspective. You will remember the voice of Death and the quiet moments of kindness in a harsh time.
