The narrator of this nineteenth-century novel is a dinner guest who hears the Time Traveller describe a trip through time. The inventor reached the year 802,701 and found Earth populated by the Eloi, small and pleasure-loving people who live in sunlit comfort, and the Morlocks, who live underground and tend machines. When the Time Machine is stolen, the Traveller must descend among the Morlocks to retrieve it, with Weena, an Eloi woman he rescues, at his side. Wells uses the future to comment on the class division of his own era.
Good for readers who want a brief, quick classic of science fiction. It also works well for anyone curious about how early writers pictured the distant future.
Outward-looking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Systems Thinker. Which reader are you?
