La metamorfosis

by Franz Kafka

About the book

At the start, Gregor Samsa, a clothing salesman who lives with his parents and sister, discovers that he has turned into a gigantic insect overnight. He concerns himself with work, the manager who arrives at the door, and the family's finances, while they adapt to a son who cannot speak to them. Grete feeds him at first, but as money gets tight and lodgers arrive, the household turns against the thing in the bedroom. The tone is calm, almost bureaucratic, which makes the events more disturbing.

This short work is ideal for readers who like fiction that works as a parable. It raises questions about duty, self-worth and rejection, and it is brief enough to try in a single sitting.
