About the book

Teresa Mendoza is the girlfriend of a small-time drug smuggler from Sinaloa, Mexico, and when he is murdered, she has to run to survive. She flees to southern Spain, where she is slowly drawn into the smuggling business along the Strait of Gibraltar and works her way up through the ranks of the trade to become a major boss. Pérez-Reverte shows her as a woman who learns to be cold in a violent world, and he mixes a journalist's research with a ballad-like narration. The novel was adapted as a TV series.

Readers who like crime stories with a female lead and a strong sense of the Mediterranean and Mexico will enjoy it.
