About the book

Juliet Ashton, a London author in 1946, is searching for a subject when a stranger on Guernsey writes to her about a secondhand book. Through letters she learns about the book club formed during the German occupation, where islanders gathered to discuss books and share a potato-peel pie, partly to hide a forbidden roast. She travels to the island, meets Dawsey, Isola, Amelia, and the child Kit, and slowly learns what happened to their friend Elizabeth. The whole story unfolds in letters and telegrams.

It is for fans of light historical fiction who enjoy humor along with tragedy. A thoughtful read for anyone who loves books about books and the small kindnesses that sustain a community during a war.
