Le Monde de Sophie

About the book

Sophie Amundsen has just turned fourteen when two anonymous questions arrive in her letterbox: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" Her mysterious teacher, Alberto Knox, begins a correspondence course in philosophy, from Socrates to Sartre, while odd postcards for a girl named Hilde seem to suggest that Sophie's world might be written by someone else. Jostein Gaarder combines a history of thought with a puzzle plot that turns increasingly metaphysical.

If philosophy always seemed dry, this offers a livelier door in. By the last pages the survey and the mystery have become the same thing.
