During World War II, British prisoners of war in a Japanese camp in Thailand are ordered to build a railway bridge over the River Kwai. Colonel Nicholson, a proud British officer, insists on keeping discipline and proving his men's skill, and so he supervises the construction of an excellent bridge, despite its use by the enemy. Meanwhile, a British commando team under Major Warden plans to destroy it, setting up a clash between duty and sense.
Readers who know the film will find the novel more ironic and bitter. It is a good choice for those interested in war fiction that studies pride, obedience, and the way a person's code of honor can be turned against him.
Thought-provoking; a moderate read.
