Limonov

About the book

Carrère writes about Eduard Limonov, a Russian writer and political figure whose life took him from a Soviet childhood in Kharkiv to a punk poet in Moscow, then to New York as a busboy and a butler, then to Paris as a literary figure. Later he fought in the Balkans on the Serbian side and founded the National Bolshevik Party in Russia, ending up in prison. Carrère, who met him, tells his life as part biography and part inquiry into who he is, and why a man like that matters.

A strong choice for those interested in post-Soviet Russia and in nonfiction that reads like a novel. It's more of a character study than a political history.
