In Samuel Beckett's 1953 novel, the third of his trilogy after Molloy and Malone Dies, a voice speaks without a body, place, or name. It tells stories about characters like Mahood and Worm and doubts whether it is speaking at all. The text is a continuous monologue without paragraphs and ends with the line: you must go on, I can't go on, I'll go on.
It is a challenging book for dedicated readers of modernist literature. The reward is an experience of language at its limit.
Deep, inward-looking, open-ended and thought-provoking; a demanding read.
Best for readers like The Literary Connoisseur. Which reader are you?
