Bilbo Baggins would rather stay at home with his pipe and second breakfast, but Gandalf sends him off with thirteen dwarves to recover the treasure of the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the dragon. In the dark under the Misty Mountains he finds a ring and bests Gollum at riddles; later he helps the dwarves escape the elves of Mirkwood and the spiders there. The quest culminates in a great battle over gold, and in Bilbo's decision to make peace.
Readers of any age who want adventure with humor and a small hero will enjoy it. It also serves as the gateway to Tolkien's Middle-earth, introducing the places and ring that matter later.
Clear-cut and escapist; a moderate read.
