Lyle is a friendly crocodile who lives with the Primm family in a brownstone on East 88th Street. He spends his days jumping rope with neighborhood children and helping with chores. Conflict arises when Mr. Grumps, a neighbor who owns a high-strung cat named Loretta, grows irritated by Lyle’s presence and has him committed to a zoo. After his former show business partner, Hector P. Valenti, breaks him out, Lyle eventually earns back the neighborhood’s approval by saving Mr. Grumps and Loretta from a house fire.
Children and parents read this story to see how a displaced outsider finds a sense of belonging in a conventional city setting. The narrative shows that character is defined by actions rather than appearance or species. Readers walk away with a perspective on civic duty and the idea that even those who seem frightening can become valued members of a community through helpfulness and bravery.
Practical, outward-looking, clear-cut and escapist; an easy read.
