Madeleine is the smallest of twelve little girls who live in an old house in Paris with Miss Clavel, a nun who looks after them. They walk to school in two straight lines, but Madeleine is not afraid of mice, and she shows it. One night Miss Clavel wakes with a feeling that something is wrong, and discovers that Madeleine has appendicitis. Madeleine goes to the hospital for an operation, and the other girls visit, envious of her toys and her scar. Ludwig Bemelmans tells the story in light rhyming verse, with yellow-and-black drawings of Paris landmarks.
Parents who want a bedtime read for young children will like its humor and its brave heroine. It also introduces Paris views in a form even toddlers enjoy, and the rhyme makes it easy to remember.
Practical and clear-cut; an easy read.
