In 1984, Betty Mahmoody, an American, travels with her Iranian-born husband, Moody, and their four-year-old daughter Mahtob to Iran for what he says will be a two-week visit. Once there, he announces that they will stay permanently. Betty is stripped of her passport, subject to her husband's violence and the restrictions of the new Islamic Republic, and she plans a secret escape with Mahtob across the mountains to Turkey.
It is a first-person survival account for readers who like true stories of captivity and escape. Note that it reflects Betty's perspective and her fears and has been criticized in Iran, so it suits readers who want it as one account rather than a portrait of a whole country.
Inward-looking and clear-cut; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Growth Strategist. Which reader are you?
