When newlyweds John and Jenny Grogan, in Florida, decide to get a dog before having a baby, they choose a yellow Labrador puppy, Marley, from a litter. He turns out to be energetic and destructive, chewing couches, crashing through screen doors, and failing obedience school. Grogan, a newspaper columnist, writes about thirteen years of living with him through moves, job changes, miscarriages, and the arrival of three children. The comedy shifts to affection as Marley ages and eventually dies. The memoir grew out of a column he wrote at the dog's death.
For dog lovers and anyone who has shared a home with a difficult pet. It is easy to read, often funny, and likely to leave a lump in your throat.
