About the book

Maya Vidal is nineteen, a drug addict and a fugitive from Berkeley, California, who has fled to a remote island in Chiloé, in southern Chile, to hide from criminals and the FBI. Living with a local family and an old friend of her grandmother's, she recovers from her addiction and keeps a notebook describing the events that led to her flight, including the death of her grandfather, her time on the streets of Las Vegas and her entanglement with a dangerous crowd. The notebook alternates with the present on the island.

Allende's readers and those who like coming-of-age stories with a rough past will find redemption and a strong sense of place.
