About the book

Benson, a Black daycare teacher in Houston, and Mike, a Japanese American chef, have been together for a couple of years and are unsure about their relationship. When Mike's estranged father falls ill in Osaka, Mike travels there, and his mother, Mitsuko, arrives from Japan to stay with Benson in the apartment. The novel alternates between the two men's perspectives and follows the awkward, funny and tender household that forms.

It suits readers who like contemporary novels about queer relationships, family and food, with a focus on everyday scenes. It is a good pick for those who enjoy warm dialogue and unforced emotion.
