by Ernesto Che Guevara

About the book

At twenty-three, Ernesto Guevara, a medical student, left Buenos Aires with his friend Alberto Granado, a biochemist, to cross South America on a motorcycle called La Poderosa. The diary follows them through Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela, recording breakdowns, hunger, scrounged meals, friendly hosts and the sight of poverty among miners and Indigenous people. A stay at the San Pablo leper colony in Peru is a notable episode. By the end, the young traveller sounds noticeably different from the one who began.

This is a good pick for readers who like travel diaries and who are curious about the early life of Che Guevara. It gives a lively, humorous look at friendship and at the experiences that started his political thinking.
