Barrington Jedidiah Walker is seventy-four, a Caribbean-born man living in Hackney, London, who has been married to Carmel for fifty years and has been seeing Morris, a man he has loved since they were teenagers, for almost as long. He presents himself as a flamboyant dresser who goes out to meet his friend, and Carmel suspects he is cheating with a woman. When Barrington decides he wants to be honest, he and Carmel face questions about their marriage and their lives. Bernardine Evaristo tells it with verse-like passages and humour, with chapters from both spouses.
Readers who like warm, funny novels about older characters, the Caribbean diaspora, and love that was hidden will find a lively, generous story. It suits fans of her Booker-winning novel.
Inward-looking and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
