Tim Carrier is a stonemason who goes into a bar to relax after work and is mistaken by a stranger for a hired killer he is waiting to meet. The stranger hands him an envelope of money and a photo of a woman, Linda, the target. Tim warns Linda, and the two flee across the city, pursued by the real assassin, who is methodical and nearly unstoppable. Koontz keeps the pace fast and the roles unclear until the final act.
It suits thriller readers who like a clean, single-premise chase with an ordinary protagonist. It is a good choice for a weekend read when you want suspense without a lot of subplots.
