Two boys in Kabul, Amir and Hassan, are inseparable but not equal: Amir is Pashtun and wealthy, Hassan is a Hazara servant's son. At a kite tournament in 1975, Hassan runs for Amir's winning kite and is brutally attacked by Assef, and Amir, hiding, does nothing. Shame breaks the friendship. After the Soviet invasion, Amir lives in Fremont, California, with his father Baba, until he is called back to Afghanistan to rescue Hassan's son, Sohrab.
Suited to readers who want a story about redemption in a historical setting. It tells you what a decision made in fear can cost and what it takes to repair it.
Inward-looking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
