About the book

Two young poets, Arturo Belano and Ulises Lima, are the leaders of the "visceral realists," a Mexico City avant-garde movement. In the 1970s they go in search of Cesárea Tinajero, a forgotten poet of the 1920s. The novel is divided into three parts, with the middle section consisting of more than a hundred testimonies by people who met the two poets across decades and continents. The bookends are the diary of a teenager, Juan García Madero, who joins them. Roberto Bolaño writes about literary obsession, exile and youth.

An ambitious book for readers who like complex, multi-voiced novels about poetry and travel. It suits those who want to read one of the major Latin American novels of recent decades.
