About the book

Juan, a Black Argentine man with a rare gift, can serve as a medium for the Order, a secret society that wants immortality by calling up a dark entity. After his wife's death, he and his young son Gaspar flee the Order, traveling Argentina in the years of the dictatorship. The novel then follows a group of young people in the 1980s and examines the ways a family, a cult and a country can all consume their own. It alternates between family drama, occult ritual and political terror.

A strong fit for readers who want literary horror with weight and a social conscience. It is long and complex, and best for those who enjoy large novels that combine the supernatural with history.

Reading profile

Deep and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
