Amir, a wealthy boy in 1970s Kabul, and Hassan, the son of his father's Hazara servant, spend their days flying kites. When Amir wins the city's kite-fighting tournament, Hassan runs the kite for him and is attacked by the bully Assef, while Amir watches from hiding and does nothing. Guilt drives Amir to make Hassan leave. After the Soviet invasion Amir flees to California with his father Baba, and years later a call from Rahim Khan brings him back to Afghanistan to make amends.
Readers who want a novel of friendship, betrayal and atonement set against modern Afghan history will find it moving. It also puts a human face on the country before and after the Taliban.
Inward-looking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
