Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator who taught literacy to impoverished adults, argues that conventional schooling treats students as empty containers to be filled by teachers, what he calls the banking model. This approach keeps the oppressed passive. He proposes a dialogical education in which teachers and students learn together, name their world, and act to change it, a process he calls conscientization. The book also discusses the relationship between oppressors and the oppressed.
It is for teachers, community organizers and students of politics who want a foundational text on critical pedagogy. It is dense in places, but readers come away with a clear alternative to lecture-based teaching.
Deep; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Deep Diver. Which reader are you?
