Kai is the ruler of a vast simulated world, a god-like figure who lives in a perfect state he has built to his own taste. His life is dominated by power fantasies and boredom, until he is told he must marry another ruler, Melanie, who controls her own simulation. Their meeting is awkward, and what unfolds becomes a clash between two people who have designed their worlds to flatter themselves. Brandon Sanderson uses the short length to build a sharp, odd story about control and consciousness.
