Hollis Woods is a twelve-year-old girl who has been moved from one foster home to another and has run away from many. A gifted artist, she draws pictures of the families she lives with, including the Regals, a warm family she loved and then left. Patricia Reilly Giff alternates the present, in which she is placed with Josie, an elderly artist who is starting to lose her memory, and the past with the Regals. Hollis must decide whether to hold on to this new home and what she owes Josie.
Readers aged nine to twelve will connect with this gentle story about belonging and chosen families. It's a good book for classrooms and for children interested in art, and it handles difficult topics with kindness.
Inward-looking and clear-cut; an easy read.
