Lee Fiora, a girl from a modest family in Indiana, wins a scholarship to the Ault School, a prestigious boarding school in Massachusetts. She finds herself surrounded by wealthy, confident classmates, and the novel follows her four years there as she watches, imitates, and misjudges the social code of the place. She develops a crush on a popular boy, struggles with friends, and thinks constantly about money, class, and what others think of her. Curtis Sittenfeld lets the older Lee narrate with precise, uncomfortable honesty.
Readers who like campus novels and coming-of-age stories will find it sharp. It is especially good for anyone who has felt like an outsider among people who seem to belong.
Inward-looking and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
