On the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington State, a storyteller named Thomas Builds-the-Fire meets the legendary blues musician Robert Johnson, who arrives with a guitar and a history involving a deal with the devil. The two inspire Thomas to form a band, Coyote Springs, with his friend Victor and Junior. They get a break from a record company, then face tests both from the music business and from tribal life. Sherman Alexie tells it with a mix of humor, myth and anger about Native American poverty and its history.
It suits readers of contemporary Native American literature and music stories. Fans of Alexie's short stories will find the same voice at novel length.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
