Maya Angelou continues her autobiography after I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. In this second volume she is seventeen, a mother with a baby son, Guy, and she is trying to make a life in California in the 1940s. She takes jobs as a cook, waitress, and later a madam's associate, gets involved with a man who leads her into the underworld of prostitution, and works to keep her son safe while looking for dignity and independence. Angelou describes her mother's strength and her own growing sense of responsibility.
It suits readers who have enjoyed the first volume and want to follow her young adulthood, as well as those drawn to memoirs about poverty, race and motherhood in postwar America. The pacing is steady, and the book can be picked up again easily after a break.
Inward-looking and clear-cut; an easy read.
