Sophie Duguet, a woman in her thirties, wakes up after episodes of memory loss and realizes that people around her are dying, with her as the common factor. She cannot remember what she has done, and she believes she might be responsible. She flees, takes a new identity, and tries to start a life elsewhere, while a husband and a police investigator close in. Lemaitre builds a psychological thriller around an unreliable narrator.
It is for readers who like tightly plotted French crime fiction with twists, and who enjoy not knowing whom to trust. The book is short and fast, best read in a couple of sittings. The reveals arrive steadily, and the final explanation reframes earlier scenes, which makes the book satisfying to reread if you want to spot the clues.
