Sam and Dave decide to dig an enormous hole in the ground, vowing not to stop until they find something spectacular. Accompanied by their dog, the boys tunnel deep into the earth, stopping only for chocolate milk and animal crackers. As they alter their direction and split up, they narrowly miss massive diamonds hidden just inches away in the dirt. The dog's intuition constantly contrasts with the boys’ decisions. Eventually, they fall through the bottom of the world and land back home, though subtle visual details suggest their surroundings have changed.
Children and parents read this book for its visual irony and the tension between the text and the illustrations. It forces readers to pay attention to details that the characters overlook, creating a sense of observational play. Readers walk away with an appreciation for the difference between a character’s perspective and the objective reality of the world. It serves as an exercise in visual literacy, teaching kids to look for clues in pictures to understand the full scope of a narrative.
