Pi Patel grows up in Pondicherry, where his father runs a zoo, and he practices Hinduism, Christianity and Islam at once with equal devotion. When the family emigrates to Canada, their cargo ship sinks in the Pacific, and Pi ends up on a lifeboat with a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The novel follows his 227 days adrift, as he learns to survive alongside an animal that could kill him.
This is a book for anyone who likes survival stories that turn into arguments about faith and storytelling. The ending asks you to choose between two versions of events, and which one you prefer says something about how you read.
Deep, contemplative, open-ended and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Wisdom Collector. Which reader are you?
