About the book

In 1929, George Pemberton brings his new wife, Serena, to the North Carolina mountains, where he plans to build a timber business. Serena is strong, ambitious and ruthless, a rider who trains an eagle to hunt snakes and takes charge of the logging crews. When Pemberton's earlier affair produces a child, Serena sets out to eliminate any threat to their empire, and the mountain community, from loggers to a sheriff, is drawn into the conflict.

It is for readers who like dark, Southern Gothic fiction with a sense of historical setting. It suits those who enjoy tragic stories with a formidable female antagonist.
