About the book

Florent-Claude Labrouste is a forty-six-year-old agricultural engineer in France, depressed and addicted to an antidepressant, Captorix, which kills his libido. He leaves his Japanese girlfriend, Yuzu, quits his job and drifts across Normandy, recalling past loves and sexual encounters. He visits an old friend, Aymeric, a farmer driven to ruin by European agricultural policy, and reflects on his own failures and on a society in decline. The novel was published just before the Yellow Vests protests.

It is for readers who like Houellebecq's bleak humour and social satire, with a very pessimistic tone.

Reading profile

Deep, inward-looking and thought-provoking; a moderate read.

Best for readers like The Deep Diver. Which reader are you?
