Conor O'Malley, thirteen, is bullied at school, sees his mother grow weaker from cancer, and has a recurring nightmare. At seven minutes past midnight a monster shaped like the old yew tree outside his window appears and says it will tell him three stories, after which Conor must tell his own, the truth he is hiding. Patrick Ness wrote the book from an idea by Siobhan Dowd, who died of cancer before she could, and Jim Kay's dark ink illustrations accompany the text in its illustrated form.
Young readers, and adults, who can face stories about grief will find honesty and tenderness. It treats anger as a natural part of loss.
Inward-looking and contemplative; an easy read.
