Neil Gaiman retells the Snow White tale from the point of view of the queen, who is shown as a clever woman fighting a monstrous girl. In this version, the girl born from a queen's blood on the snow is a creature with black hair and white skin, who feeds on blood and is not human. The story is told in the first person by the stepmother, who describes how she sought to save her kingdom. The Colleen Doran illustrated edition presents it as a graphic work with dark art.
It suits readers who like twisted fairy-tale retellings and short horror. It is a quick, atmospheric read.
Balanced in tone; an easy read.
