A schoolgirl in Norway finds a letter in her mailbox containing only three words, "Who are you?", followed by another, "Where does the world come from?" Sophie Amundsen soon has a mysterious correspondent, the philosopher Alberto Knox, who sends her lessons covering the Greeks, medieval thinkers, Descartes, Locke, Kant and Marx. A second storyline about a girl named Hilde and her father gradually merges with the first. Jostein Gaarder's 1991 novel became one of the world's most popular introductions to philosophy.
Beginners with no background in the subject can enjoy it, and teachers sometimes use it in classes. It works as a story first and an overview second.
Deep; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Deep Diver. Which reader are you?
