About the book

Jess Goldberg grows up in the 1940s and 1950s in Buffalo, New York, a working-class child who does not fit gender expectations. As a young adult, Jess enters the city's bar culture, where butch and femme women form a community that is regularly raided by police. Over the decades, Jess works in factories, faces violence, goes through the changes of the labor and gay rights movements, and makes difficult decisions about identity and medical transition.

Feinberg's novel, drawn partly from the author's life, is for readers who want a history of working-class LGBTQ life. It suits those interested in gender, labor and community stories.
