On a Scottish holiday park by a loch, twelve people in a row of log cabins live through a long rainy day in the summer. The novel moves among them, including a couple with a baby, a retired pair, teenagers, and a group of young men. Each section gives one character's thoughts, and slowly a feeling of unease builds, as small events and mistrust of neighbors, including a Eastern European family, create tension. Sarah Moss uses the weather and the cramped setting to show how petty irritation and prejudice can lead to something worse.
Readers who like short, tightly written novels about modern Britain, and a slow build to a shock, will find it striking.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
