About the book

The Quran is the central scripture of Islam, which Muslims believe was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over about twenty-three years in the seventh century. It is divided into 114 chapters, called surahs, arranged roughly from longest to shortest, beginning with Al-Fatiha. The text covers the oneness of God, the stories of earlier prophets such as Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, rules for prayer, charity, and fasting, guidance on family and society, and descriptions of the Day of Judgment and the afterlife.

For Muslims it is a text for recitation, daily reading, and reflection. Others read it to understand the foundations of Islamic belief and law, or to study the religion's history and literature in its own words.
