A girl named Beatryce is found asleep in a barn by a monk, Brother Edik, with no memory of how she got there. She also has a secret, she can read and write, which is forbidden to girls in this kingdom, and a prophecy says a girl will bring down the king. With a goat named Answelica, a boy named Jack Dory, and a mysterious tale, Beatryce sets out to find her past and face the king.
Kate DiCamillo's fable is a gentle but exciting read for children around eight to twelve, and a lovely book to read aloud. It suits readers who like stories about courage, kindness, and the power of words.
Clear-cut and escapist; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Escapist Adventurer. Which reader are you?
