Andrew Lang collected the stories in this volume from French, German, Scandinavian and other sources and published them in 1889, as the first of his colored fairy books. It includes tales such as Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Hop o' My Thumb, Little Red Riding Hood, and Sleeping Beauty, many of them taken from Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. They are written in a clear, simple style, which aims to give children a good selection of the traditional stories.
It is a classic for parents who want to read old fairy tales aloud, and for collectors of the genre. Some tales are less well known and give a nice change from the usual versions.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Curious Generalist. Which reader are you?
