About the book

Set in the post-apocalyptic settlement of Waknuk, the story follows David Strorm, a boy raised in a rigid fundamentalist society that pathologically fears genetic mutation. Following a nuclear disaster known as Tribulation, the community enforces the Definition of Norm by destroying any plant, animal, or human that deviates from a strict biological standard. David hides a secret mutation: he and a small group of children possess telepathic abilities. When his younger sister's psychic power attracts the authorities, the group flees into the Fringes to escape execution.

Readers who value mid-century speculative fiction and social commentary will find a chilling depiction of religious extremism and tribalism. The narrative challenges the logic of social exclusion and the belief that biological perfection dictates human worth. A reader finishes the book with a perspective on how fear of the unknown suppresses evolution. It provides a sobering look at how societies prioritize preservation of the past over the survival of the species.
