About the book

Inara Erickson inherits a house on an island in Washington State, and when she begins to clear it, she finds a piece of embroidered silk hidden in a wall. It carries a message in a Chinese dialect, and the text leads to the story of Mei Lan, a young woman in the 1880s who was caught up in the anti-Chinese violence of Seattle, and her struggle to survive. Inara works with a Chinese-American professor to find out what happened to her, while her own family history and the future of the property are in doubt.

Fans of dual-timeline historical fiction will enjoy it, especially those interested in the history of the Chinese Exclusion era in the American West.
